"Sound of Dunes" stands for the raw, the pure, the handmade. Characterised by original materials and rough haptics, perfection is found in the imperfect, warmth is touched by a cool breeze. Warm woods and cream tones define the theme. Vanilla combines with citrus aromas and unexpected, exotic notes.
"Botanic Utopia" stands for a botanical utopia full of power, elegance and beauty. Associated with organic green tones, a symbiosis of human and plant creativity emerges. The results are beguiling floral compositions that inspire fantasies and make them blossom.
"Go 4 crazy" - exuberant, experimental and full of good humour, dazzling individuals with a punky, self-ironic diversity present themselves as reincarnated teens from the 90s. With calculatedly cool outfits and a playful online presence, the fun and joy of playing is nevertheless very much to the fore. What does the attitude to life smell and taste like? Just as complex as the playful self-image of the e-girls and e-boys. The metallic look is complemented by spicy and citrusy notes.
All in all, fascinating, multi-layered compositions have been created and we are looking forward to using them in a variety of ways. close

At FREY&LAU, 17,000 drums and approx. 800 IBCs are produced every year, which have to be disposed of at a cost - and we're not talking about pennies here, but hard euros.
From now on, FREY&LAU will use the empty packaging recycling capacities of our long-standing packaging supplier Witt. Since the end of May, the FREY&LAU goods receiving team has switched over the disposal stream, saving not only thousands of euros but also work steps! And by the way, a lot of CO² is also saved!
The Witt lorries with the fresh packaging, which arrive at FREY&LAU up to 4 times a week, are immediately loaded with the packaging to be disposed of. This avoids CO²-wasting empty transports and simplifies handling.
But FREY&LAU and Witt have not yet reached the end of the (green) road: Witt will soon be able to recycle our main packaging material, PE canisters, too! They are working on the approval of a plant that can shred PE canisters, clean them and process them by extrusion into new & inexpensive packaging materials. Our disposed quantities are enough to produce approx. 850 new IBCs, which corresponds to 18 tonnes less CO²! close

Covid-19 has had a major impact on our work over the past year. Therefore, the behaviour of all our staff is all the more impressive. Everyone fully supported and full-heartedly implemented the decisions made by the management. With a lot of dedication and the will to change, we have managed to master the situation and go new - often virtual - ways. The management, Dr. Maja Zippel and Claas Nendel, has thanked all employees for their special commitment and great performance by paying them a bonus.
We would like to sincerely thank all our customers and partners for the good cooperation in this extraordinary year. Especially in these times, we greatly appreciate the trust you place in us.

The Charta cover all spans of sustainability and takes a life-cycle approach. Based on the 5 focus areas responsible sourcing, environmental footprint, well-being of employees, product safety and transparency and partnership.
As a family business we are looking further ahead than many other companies. We want our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to be healthy, happy and successful. This goal can only be achieved though a path of long-term planning, particularly with regard to nature and people. There is one Earth only and we must protect her! close

As the demand for our high-quality products is constantly growing, FREY&LAU is now investing in another batch vacuum rectification plant.A new hall, which also provides space for further distillation plants as well as a filling room and a new technical center, will also include the new rectification system - a 13 metre-high technical masterpiece made of shiny stainless steel. It will expand the distillation capacities of FREY&LAU by 40 % and allow us to fractionate even more precisely.
The new plant combines excellent separation performance with even more volume and also has state-of-the-art automation technology with which we want to go in the future.
In June 2017 felt the starting shot for the new construction project. The plant will be put into operation in the first quarter of next year - we will keep you up to date. close

IHK Vocational Qualification Certificate in just one year

From nothing to a vocational certificate in one year: As part of a unique project in cooperation with the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (German Federal Employment Agency), the IHK (Chambers of Industry and Commerce), and the Wirtschaftsakademie Schleswig-Holstein (Schleswig-Holstein Business Academy), Frey + Lau GmbH has enabled five employees to retroactively obtain a recognized and accredited vocational qualification. The project is made possible by the “external students' examination” process. The German Federal Employment Agency supports this measure by providing financial support for training course fees, travel expenses, teaching materials and wage subsidies within the scope of the “WeGeBau” initiative, a Germany-wide program offered to employees over 45 years of age and those who do not have any usable certified vocational training.
Vocational qualification made easy? Far from it: the employees had to intensively study and prepare for the regular theory portion of the exam as well as the practical examination in just one year, on a part-time basis – a study course which would usually take two to three years at a vocational college. This can only be possible with full support from family and colleagues – and with so much backing, all five employees accomplished their goal and successfully passed the exam with good results. Unskilled employees thus became “Chemical Production Specialists” or “Warehouse Logistics Technicians”.
FREY&LAU is a co-initiator of the project and helped support it financially. CEO Claas Nendel says: "We feel strongly connected to our staff, and as a growing company, we are continuously looking for qualified, skilled employees to join us. It was therefore a logical step for us to enable our unskilled employees to document their expertise and know-how by obtaining a vocational qualification. Acquiring the specialized knowledge also lets employees understand their tasks better, and so the quality of work increases as a result.” close

Recently, Phillip Behrens traveled to India to check on the 2017 crop of the Mentha Arvensis, M. Piperita and M. Spicata mint species, and to give a first-hand report on what harvest yields can be expected.
Welcome news: For Mentha Arvensis, we expect a harvest yield in the Uttar Pradesh province similar to the one in 2016, i.e. 30,000-32,000 MT of crude mint oil. Although synthetic menthol has become an increasingly important commodity in recent years, it cannot cover the growing demand alone, so that the position of natural menthol on the world market is stable.
In the case of Mentha Piperita, all expectations point to a significant decline in production volume: The improvement of Piperita plants is stagnating, and at the same time, other plants are more attractive to farmers. While there were still 500 MT in 2016, the yield will fall well below the 400 MT mark this year. In the Uttar Pradesh and Punjab provinces, we estimate 175 to max. 200 MT. This is currently leading to extreme price increases, and we do not expect the situation to ease before the 2018 harvest! For the new crop year, the hope is that the current price hike will serve as an incentive to plant and cultivate a higher volume next year.
Unfortunately, the expected yield for Mentha Spicata is almost nonexistent: The cultivation trend in India is continuing to decline for this mint species.
In addition, new Goods & Services Tax (GST) laws in India are impeding payment transactions within the supply chain for mint products, which is also triggering price increases for them. Reimbursement of the GST will be considerably delayed, and the manufacturers will thus calculate higher sales prices for exports as well.
Even though Mr. Behrens brought back some figures that were not completely pleasing, at FREY&LAU, close contact with the producers is the foundation for a good and long-lasting cooperation. This approach lets us ensure that the raw ingredients meet our high quality standards. close

With more than 1,500 international exhibitors, Beautyworld Middle East is one of the largest and, in the true sense of the word, most beautiful trade shows for cosmetics, wellbeing, fragrances and hair care worldwide. It is the Middle East’s premier industry networking event. From makeup and hair styling to current scents and body care to wellbeing and spa – in Dubai, visitors are introduced to current trends, interesting product innovations and new market developments having to do with beauty and wellbeing.
At this year’s Beautyworld from May 14-16, the German pavilion, themed “Germany – The Quality Country,” saw a large number of visitors and had FREY&LAU as one of its exhibitors. Its open, modern design with harmonious and warm colors invited numerous visitors to discover new fragrance worlds and get to know FREY&LAU’s extensive portfolio. One of the special highlights that Export Manager Kai Lüdemann’s trade show team showcased was the newly developed oriental Fine Fragrance Line, which was shown exclusively and for the first time at Beautyworld. The balsamic and spicy character and the sophisticated composition of sensual and sweet aromas of its six new scent creations for ladies and men conjure up visions of the magic of the orient and its many delights. In addition, perfumers and fragrance experts from Marketing and Sales presented a great deal of other highlights from the company’s wide range of perfume oils and essential oils as well as from its raw materials for fragrance creation.
Kai Lüdemann is highly satisfied and comes to an entirely positive conclusion: “These past three days in Dubai have been a great success for us. Our new Fine Fragrance Line has been very well received by visitors, and we are pleased about numerous new, promising contacts. We have been able to gain many new impressions and get an idea of current tendencies and trends on the market – and we are going to integrate all of this in our next product development projects.” Those projects are certain to feature new attractive topics for the 2018 Beautyworld in Dubai! close

The Henstedt-Ulzburg Volkslauf run and walk took place for the tenth time on May 12th, surpassing itself with some “special effects” to mark the milestone anniversary: Along with the 5 and 10 km routes, a full marathon course awaited ambitious runners for the first time. Participants who did not want to go the whole distance alone could also run with a relay team. The Bateria Barulho Samba band provided the extra dose of motivation and the right rhythm for the nearly 2,000 participants – and off we went.
It is a point of honor that FREY&LAU supported this great event not only as one of the main sponsors, but also with a team of its own: 68 enthusiastic employees and their families took to the starting line sporting bright orange shirts. We like to think of FREY&LAU as one big team, in which everyone is different, but still sticks closely together. The running crew perfectly reflected our sense of community: From children of the ‘90s to the over 50s, whether walking or running a 5 km or 10 km, FREY&LAU was everywhere at the event. A special athletic accomplishment: One colleague even did us proud in the marathon race and earned a place in the Top 15. Hats off! close

Day after day, we encounter a myriad of impressions and trends from many different areas of life. Our marketing experts strive to capture and channel them precisely. They visit fashion shows, attend trade fairs, and travel through metropolitan regions – always right on the pulse of the times. They immerse themselves in street life, observe food trends, and always have a close eye on national and international styles. Every year, these impressions are then compiled together into trend concepts, which the perfumers use to create the newest fragrances. "We put a special priority on the long-term perspective when observing trends. Therefore, we also look at areas that are not associated with fragrances at first glance. However, it is exactly these areas that are extremely important, because they reflect the entire spectrum of lifestyle and are the basis for the fragrances created by our perfumers,” explains Natalia Lajca, Marketing Manager.
This year, three interesting and exciting theme worlds have emerged once again, which let the recipients get away from it all, even if only for a short escape.
“URBAN JUNGLE”, the first trending theme, creates an image of the search for harmony, peace and balance in our fast-paced digital world. It describes a feeling or a place that transforms into a biotope for harried, rushed urban dwellers and allows space for living. The perfumers have developed green, fresh notes to match this theme.
In the second theme world, “BEYOND THE RAINBOW”, we soar along the rainbow and immerse ourselves in a world full of colors, freedom and fantasy, and the perfumers have created sweet, playful fragrances that evoke this.
Our last trend story, “FAIRYTALE 4.0”, focuses on the external influences that now surround us at the dawn of the new era of technology. The current trends are progressing very rapidly and some are so amazing that they seem like fanciful fairy tales. The perfumers have created fragrance notes to complement this, scents with cool-metallic and opulent-romantic chords that reflect this mix of technology and magical fantasy.
We would be pleased to introduce you to the fragrance trends for 2018. Just contact us, we look forward to hearing from you. close

The scent of vanilla, cinnamon and cloves in the air is business as usual at FREY&LAU. But when you start smelling these tempting fragrances in other places and on every corner, it is an unmistakable sign that the Advent season is in full swing and the year is coming to a close.
Time for a glance back: 2016 was an eventful and entirely successful year at FREY&LAU, which is clearly evidenced by the above-average increase in sales. But it is the people behind the numbers that make this success possible. And because we are keenly aware of THAT, their well-being and happiness is our highest priority.
Another official confirmation of the employee-friendly corporate culture at FREY&LAU is the ethical audit, which we successfully passed again this year. However, our trainees and interns, who bring in lot of commitment and self-initiative to our company, are almost even nicer proof of this. The fact that they all completed their training at FREY&LAU with great success and then subsequently joined our team was distinguished by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), which honored FREY&LAU with a Training Award this year. We are very pleased with the award – and of course with the two new trainees, whom we had the pleasure to welcome in 2016.
Over the past twelve months, all of the departments worked tirelessly and dedicatedly on a variety of projects. Whether functional food or coffee capsules, shisha or e-liquid, FREY&LAU has successfully developed new product sectors, expanded microencapsulation, further advanced its application technology and created brand new possibilities for the confectionery segment in particular. In the Fragrances department, the application techniques area was completely redesigned. Our new evaluation concept will enable us to meet customer requirements even more precisely in the future. We enjoy introducing the wide range of innovations and projects to our partners and customers personally, and so in 2016, FREY&LAU was once again present at the most important trade fairs in the industry – from in-cosmetics in São Paulo and COTECA in Hamburg up to InterCHARM in Moscow.
FREY&LAU can proudly look back on a successful year, one which we can wind down with a feeling of satisfaction and then start 2017 with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. We wish you a peaceful and relaxing Christmas holiday and a new year filled with good health, happiness and success. close

The annual SEPAWA Congress is a key event and highlight for the who’s who in the detergents/cleansers, cosmetics and perfume industries. This year, around 230 exhibitors and more than 2.600 visitors from over 49 nations gathered from October 12-14 to utilize the opportunity that the communication platform offers. There was a bittersweet note at the end of the 63rd Congress, because the event is moving to a new location in 2017. This means saying a fond farewell to the familiar, homey atmosphere of the small baroque town of Fulda and a new start in a global setting in the center of the Berlin metropolis. The move was spurred by the growing interest in all of the topics that drive the industry and are a focus of the Congress.
Of course, FREY&LAU was also present at the final congress held in Fulda. At the company’s booth, which featured a warm, welcoming ambiance and elegant design, congress visitors were presented with special solutions for perfumery in the personal care segment. They also had the chance to smell an assortment of the current trend fragrances for 2017 in a live performance. Selected fragrances were presented on “EVA beads”, which allow the scent to optimally develop and unfold, and thus be smelled and experienced in a truly authentic way. The presentation was very well received by the trade show visitors: "We were very happy about the great interest we saw. After three successful congress days, our experts went back home filled with excellent impressions and promising new contacts,” says Michael Ackermann (Sales Manager D-A-CH), very pleased with the result. As in past years, a clear focus emerged among the visitors: Natural cosmetics are becoming an increasingly higher priority for conventional cosmetics companies. FREY&LAU, with its broad portfolio of essential oils and natural fragrances, is an excellent position here. We are looking forward to exciting new projects – and to the next SEPAWA Congress, with a capital city flair. close

While this year’s late summer is scoring extra points by giving us a sunny bonus, we are already looking ahead to summer 2017: From 07 to 09 September, FREY&LAU presented the summer flavours for next year at the 4th COTECA Global Industry Expo in Hamburg, Europe's most important trade fair for coffee, tea and cocoa. Around 200 exhibitors from 30 nations presented their products and innovations at the Congress Center, accompanied by an extensive programme of workshops and presentations. Among other highlights this year, industry and business professionals had the opportunity to experience the fine art of roasting coffee first hand in the outdoor coffee roasting arena, attend professional coffee cuppings, and watch a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
As in past years, this year also offered us the ideal conditions to establish and deepen personal business relationships with suppliers and customers while following the latest market developments as well. FREY&LAU was present with a modern, approachable booth with a fresh design that encouraged interactive exchange. Our trade fair appearance especially focused on the summer flavours for 2017 and featured an inviting scent station where a sophisticated air device let trade visitors literally smell the performance of the flavours directly in the cup, without any liquid. In addition, our visitors had the opportunity to taste current trends and highlights in various types of media. Right in line with the trending topic of coffee, the flavoured coffee capsules were particularly well-received.
The conclusion after three successful and inspiring days at the expo: Our participation at COTECA 2016 was a complete success. Existing relationships were strengthened, and we were also able to make a number of exciting and promising new contacts, which we will be cultivating and advancing in the coming months. “Our flavours attracted a great deal of interest and highlighted our innovative expertise. The theme of coffee has emerged as a strong trend in the lifestyle segment and will therefore play an even more important role in our projects both now and in the future.” close

Every three years, our representatives from the various regions of the world join us here for a three-day forum, to get up to date on the latest information and share knowledge and experiences with colleagues. What began as a family business in Northern Germany more than 175 years ago has long since evolved into a successful global company – and our guest list is living proof of that: Europe was represented by Sweden, England, the Czech Republic and other countries, but the 85 participants also travelled from Brazil, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka as well as Nigeria and Vietnam.
The forum is a harmonious, informative get-together with an extensive program organized by the German colleagues. The event featured presentations on key industry topics and issues: In addition to technology, quality assurance, management and regulatory affairs; there were also presentations on current market topics and trends in the flavours and fragrances segments. However, there was more than just listening going on, tastings and samples let participants try out the flavour trends directly in the applications. In addition, agents from abroad brought in country-specific products: From tea and sweets up to cosmetics, there was a colorful variety to behold. And what do these many different “host gifts” from all corners of the world have in common? They all contain essential oils, fragrances, aromas and flavourings from FREY&LAU. close

On 02 June 2016, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) in Lübeck honoured FREY&LAU with the Vocational Training Award: for zero percent apprenticeship dropouts and a100 percent retention rate amongst trainees. “It can’t get any better than that,” praised Friederike C. Kühn, Chairperson of the IHK, who promptly came by to personally present the award. We openly admit that it makes us very proud. Of the approximately 2,500 vocational training companies in the Segeberg, Stormarn, Ostholstein, Duchy of Lauenburg and Lübeck districts that the Chamber of Commerce and Industry represents, only a maximum of ten companies win this annual award in recognition of their excellent vocational training culture. You cannot apply for the award: The IHK conducts an independent assessment, using a variety of criteria, to determine which businesses make a significant contribution to the promotion and development of young professional’s. Companies that are involved in vocational training fairs and schools, offer internships, and provide job application training – in short, businesses which support and take good care of their future professionals – score plus points. A great success for our CEOs Maja Zippel and Claas Nendel, and a sign that the company's own young professionals development program is on the right track and well received. After all, a good working environment along with staff training and development are an essential part of the corporate philosophy.
The award is an incentive to stay the course and continue to promote the next generation on a lasting basis. We are looking forward to our new apprentices, trainees and interns and are proud that our positive and supportive young professional culture is obviously talked about: This year, we were able to fill all of our apprenticeship and internship positions from speculative applications for the first time. close
